Article : Promoting Access to Medical Technologies and Innovation

Interactions between public health, intellectual property and trade

Description :

World Health Organization (WHO), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and World Trade Organization (WTO)

Promoting Access to Medical Technologies and Innovation examines the linked roles that public health policies, intellectual property and trade can play in advancing medical technologies and innovation, and ensuring it is available equitably to all who need it.

This study seeks to reinforce the understanding of the interplay between the distinct policy domains of health, trade and intellectual property, and of how they affect medical innovation and access to medical technologies. It captures a broad range of experience and data in dealing with the interplay between intellectual property, trade rules and the dynamics of access to, and innovation in, medical technologies.

Promoting Access to Medical Technologies and Innovation is a collaborative effort by the WHO, WIPO and the WTO to serve the needs of policy-makers who seek a comprehensive presentation of the full range of issues, as well as lawmakers, government officials, delegates to international organizations, non-governmental organizations and researchers. The publication opens with a foreword by the Directors-General of the three organizations.

The study begins by exploring the organizations involved in public health and the factors which shape policy. Written over four chapters, it continues by examining the policy context for action on innovation and access to medical technologies. It explores the determinants of each of these dimensions, with regards to health, intellectual property and trade.
